There is nothing particularly special about Dos Toros, but I will say it’s consistent and good. Everything is fresh, the flavors are pretty standard, the hot sauces are hot, and you can customize your meal to your liking without going bankrupt. With that said, I’ll never go out of my way to eat here, but if I want something fast and cheap before say a concert at Irving Plaza or Webster Hall… well then you’ll probably catch me at Dos Toros (these are the two times I’ve visited the Union Square location).
The way to order here is to do two tacos, one taco and a quesadilla or a burrito/plato.
The Meats: I’ve tried all three meat options: the Carnitas (pork), Pollo Asado (grilled chicken) and the Carne Asada (grilled steak) and the steak wins out. Sadly I felt like I liked the pork the least. It was dry. Go with the steak or chicken.
“Burritos and Tacos and Quesadillas… Oh my”:
Like I said earlier, everything here is good… not great, not awesome, but good.
I got a burrito with rice, cheese, black beans, steak, sour cream, guacamole and both hot sauces. I think their burrito is a great size; burritos at Chipotle or even Toloache (past review) are massive and this burrito is pretty manageable. I like the flavor of the steak, though in terms of a flavor punch, it holds nothing on anything at Toloache and even the Barbacoa at Chipotle. It probably could have used some more sour cream and the cheese gets lost. I know I sound like I didn’t like it, it’s just while I did like it, there’s much to tweak.
The tacos are standard. If you like tacos you’ll like these.
I think my favorite item on the menu, however, is the quesadilla. As someone who is all about the cheese, the quesadilla is the only item where you really get to taste it, and Dos Toros uses a really good “fake-ish” slice of cheese. I would play it simple though with the quesadilla because it can quickly turn into a burrito without the rice and beans… just get it with cheese and one of the meats and some hot sauce. Get the guac on the side.
